San Francisco has approximately 3,500 acres of green space.Yet, the area roughly from Union Square south to Potero Hill and then east to the bay – which includes most of SOMA – has a mere 37 acres of green space; this represents only 1.06 percent of the total open space for the city.
► The number of housing units in the neighborhood grew 77 percent to 17,265 between 1990 and 2005 while the rest of the City averaged eight percent growth, according to the first of five reports by a task force charged with studying the area, known as West SoMa.
► Between Seventh and Ninthand Market and Mission Streets, three developments have or will be completed by 2010.In total, the two block section of Mid-Market, which adjoins SOMA, will replace/add 2,866 units of much need livable space to the community. Multiply the number of units by 1.9 persons per unit - yes that is a standard assumption - and we can expect around 5,445 residents.
